Gender Action Link: IFIs and sexual and reproductive rights
Gender Action 2011: Gender Action research shows that although sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights are promoted by international financial institutions’ policies, they are rarely acknowledged or fulfilled through investments. This document explores how ideological assaults on SRH investments undermine the World Bank’s SRH and gender policies. Examples of the African Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank project funding shortfalls are also provided. 2011 United Nations data on women and reproductive rights around the world are briefly outlined. Recommended actions are given in the ‘What Can Civil Society Do?’ section. At the end, there are additional SRH resources suggestions. Læs mere
Women and political participation in Nigeria

Empowering Women: The effect of women’s decision making power on reproductive health services uptake. Evidence from Pakistan
X Hou; N Ma, World Bank, 2011: What correlations are there between women’s autonomy and their uptake of reproductive health services in Pakistan? This policy research working paper suggests that women’s decision making power has a significant positive impact on services uptake, while influential males’ decision making power has the opposite effect. This study finds that empowering women (for example, improving their education and economic status) improves their utilisation of maternity services. It also finds that reproductive health policy should target Pakistani male members household members involved in making such decisions so that they may gain a greater understanding of the importance of maternity services. Data for this research was drawn from the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey. Læs mere

This handbook is for writing shadow/alternative CEDAW reports that incorporate the human rights of lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. In addition to covering the technical aspects of the reporting process, this guide also describes the associated challenges and provides recommendations for using CEDAW for these purposes. Læs mere
World Development Report 2011 - Conflict, Security and DevelopmentHow can conflict-affected fragile states progress?
The World Development Report 2011: World Development Report, World Bank, 2011: Some 1.5 billion people live in countries affected by repeated cycles of political and criminal violence, and no low-income fragile or conflict-affected country has yet to achieve a single Millennium Development Goal. Here, the new World Development Report (WDR) on conflict and security asserts that fixing the economic, political, and security problems that disrupt development and trap fragile states in cycles of violence requires strengthening national institutions and improving governance in ways that prioritize citizen security, justice, and jobs. The Other Financial Crisis: Poor Women, Small Credits, Big Businesses
Christa Wichterich, WIDE 2011: India is in the midst of a financial crisis that shows striking similarities to the US subprime crisis, both in its origins and the rescue strategies used. Just as the cheap mortgage granted to low-income households in the USA, the microcredits given to poor women in rural areas worked out as financialisation of everyday life and integration of the women into the global financial market with its return-based logic. In this paper, Christa Wichterich critically analyses the microcredit scheme. Læs mere
Toolkit for Intersecting Violence: Putting Intersectional Analysis into Practice
CAWN, April 2011: This Toolkit is a companion to the CAWN report Intersecting Violences (2010) by Patricia Muñoz Cabrera. The report provides a review of feminist theories and debates relating to violence and poverty as they affect women, with a focus on Latin America. In this Toolkit we provide some practical examples on how the intersectional analysis explored in the report is being put into practice on the ground. The section headings in the Toolkit relate to chapters in the report, and we have started each section by listing some key words to reflect the multiple identities and the intersection of different dimensions of discrimination that are addressed in the subsequent case studies.
